Margaret Thom Commissioner of the Northwest Territories
Mrs. Margaret Thom was appointed as the 17th Commissioner of the Northwest Territories on June 26, 2017.
Commissioner Thom was born on the land in the Deh Cho region of the Northwest Territories and currently resides in Fort Providence. In 1971, she married Jim Thom and is mother to their four daughters and grandmother to ten grandchildren.
Commissioner Thom is a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee medal, a member of the NWT Education Hall of Fame and has been honoured with an NWT Wise Woman Award. Commissioner Thom is an Indian Residential School survivor, and is rooted in her Dene Culture and Dene Spirituality. Commissioner Thom is fluent in her Indigenous Language – Dene Zhahtie.
